THE SITUATIONSHIP: A RELATIONSHIP THAT REFUSES TO BE NAMED

The defining arrangement of the age is the one nobody will define; this paper examines the entity and finds it has no address

LAFAYETTE — The word entered the language because the thing it names had no word, and the thing it names had no word because no one involved wanted to say one. A situationship is a connection that lives in the gap between "just talking" and "together" — consistent enough to hurt when it ends, undefined enough that ending it requires no conversation, because there was never a state to leave.

This bureau wishes to be fair. The situationship is not always a failure of nerve; sometimes two people genuinely want the open middle, and there is a MOOD for exactly that — N.A.T.O., Not Attached To an Outcome, where the openness is declared and mutual. The problem is not open-endedness. The problem is open-endedness that one person chose and the other merely tolerated, each afraid that naming it would break it.

And so the situationship persists precisely because it is never spoken. Ask "what are we" and you risk the whole arrangement; don't ask, and you get to keep the warmth at the cost of the clarity. It is ambiguity monetized in feelings, and it compounds daily.
